These are a collection of short stories by a well celebrated nineteenth century Swedish author about men's dreams, desires and obligations, and their abilities, or otherwise, to fulfill those. Some of the expectations written about are from another era in history. For example, on reaching puberty in the early 1800s, a young man was expected to remain chaste until he could afford to support a wife. Strindberg had a lot to say about the church and educational institutions and their roles in foisting pointless, difficult requirements on men. In fact, he wrote a lot in this vein, about the condition of the male and duly showed his contempt for requisite actions and inactions that society had put on men. Not all stories are negative, but a lot do dwell on the general dissatisfaction of testosterone driven members of our species, towards their partners or towards their lack of fulfilment of ambitions due to lack of freedom. Marriage is not given much respect because wives are not given much respect in these tales. So feminists beware - this book was written by a thrice divorced male, treating women in the book as either vacuous, irrational beings or so level-headed, managerial and independent that they needed to be softened into more dippy creatures by giving them a dose of 'baby brain'. Even so, many of these well written stories present an interesting comparison between the 19th century and modern day. Not much has changed and, at the same time, everything has changed. Paradoxically, there is one conclusion that each story arrives at, and that is, no matter what dilemmas may arise from having a wife, heterosexual males need female companions.

Sorry only started he book....later on this!
I wasn't sure what this was, but it contains a series of vignettes around the theme of getting married - some who are happy, unfairness, gender equiviance, loneliness and more. The stories seem to be based mostly in upper Swedish society - reflecting on the unfairness of social classes, among other things. I enjoyed the writing style - it is quite classic and formal with a wide vocabulary.
In 1884 Strindberg wrote a collection of short stories, Getting Married, that presented women in an egalitarian light and for which he was tried for and acquitted of blasphemy in Sweden.[94] Two groups "led by influential members of the upper classes, supported by the right-wing press" probably instigated the prosecution; at the time, most people in Stockholm thought that Queen Sophia was behind it. He is considered the "father" of modern Swedish literature and his The Red Room (1879) has frequently been described as the first modern Swedish novel.
